Stress Relief Dough DIY Tutorial from Functional Rustic

In honor of Labor Day, Functional Rustic has a relaxing craft for you to try out this weekend. Got ten minutes, some flour, bath oil and hand lotion? Then I have the DIY craft for you! Stress Relief Dough by Functional Rustic.

Stress Relief Dough Title Page.jpg
Stress Relief Dough DIY Tutorial from Functional Rustic.

This has become my new favorite DIY project. It uses ingredients that I already have around the house so it is completely free. All you need is some baking flour, hand lotion and bath oil (Olive oil probably works too. Food coloring and glitter are optional but add some flare.)

The stress relief dough actually started as an attempt to make slime for my nephew. I scoured Pinterest for DIY slime tutorials but couldn’t find any that required ingredients I actually had. My DIY philosophy is not spending extra money to create a craft. Figure out a way to build it with what you have or don’t build it at all.

The slime project called for corn flour (which I don’t have), Elmer’s glue (I left the lid open and now it’s hard) and hair conditioner (which I also do not have right now). Off to a rocky start.

Determined to create something while also refusing to go to the store – I gathered ingredients that were similar in texture to those that were in the original tutorial.

Stress Relief Dough is what happened as a result.

Stress Relief Dough – DIY Tutorial by Functional Rustic

Ingredients: Flour, Hand Lotion, Bath Oil. Optional: Food Coloring & Glitter.

Time to complete: Ten Minutes

Step One:
Squirt a large handful of hand lotion into a bowl. If you are measuring it out – I’d say about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of hand lotion.

KIMG2741
Add about 1/3 cup of lotion to a bowl.

Step Two:
Optional – If you want the dough to be colored add food coloring now. You don’t need a lot, just a couple drops.

KIMG2744
Add food coloring to the lotion to add color to your dough.

CAUTION: Using a water based food coloring causes the dough to mold after a few weeks. I have not tried the gel based food coloring yet but I theorize it may be less likely to get moldy. I will update this post after I run some tests. Not adding any food coloring enabled the dough to last months though. The  only reason I do not have it today, is that I left it outside in the sun and it melted.

Step Three:
Add Flour. I was DIYing on the fly so I just took a couple handfuls of the flour and added it to the bowl. If you are measuring I recommend starting with 1 cup of flour and adding more as needed.

TIP: For a firmer dough use more flour.

KIMG2743
Add approximately 1 cup of flour.

Step Four:
Mix. Using your hands mix/squish the hand lotion and flour together. As you mix the ingredients it will become more dough like. Knead the dough until the texture is similar to play dough.

Step Five:
Add bath oil. Using your thumb, make an indentation in the dough forming a small bowl and pour in some Bath Oil. If you are measuring I recommend using 1 teaspoon to start. I used Skin-So-Soft from Avon because it is what I had. The oil helps the dough feel less sticky and gives it a stretchy quality. Any moisturizing oil would work and possibly even cooking oil could be used.

Knead the oil into the dough.

KIMG2742
Add some bath/baby oil.

Congratulations!!! You made Stress Relief Dough. No really, you’re done with the project now. Isn’t it fun to squeeze the dough? If you added food coloring you will notice that the more you knead the dough the more the dye is distributed.

Wait, what about the glitter?

Step Six:
Optional – add glitter to the dough. Just as you did when you added the bath oil, press your thumb into the dough and make a small bowl. Pour the glitter into the dough. If you are measuring I recommend 1 teaspoon to start.

KIMG2745
Add glitter to your dough to make it sparkle.

Fold the dough into the glitter and then just keep squeezing and kneading until the glitter is distributed.

I know what you’re thinking….glitter is really messy and I don’t want to get it all over me. Much to my surprise though, the glitter stays in the dough. I’m guessing the oil is a big factor in that. Once the glitter is in the dough it stays there – no need to worry that you will end up wearing it.

Step Seven:
Take pictures and videos of your creation and share them on DIY Projects of Facebook.

This was the first tutorial I attempted to film and had to try it a few times before I was happy. I learned something new each time I tried it so I am including all of the videos here instead of just the “best.” ENOJOY!

“Should” Statements are Ruining Your Life – A Functional Rustic Approach

Should Statements are Ruining Your Life.png
“Should” Statements are Ruining Your Life – A Functional Rustic Approach.

There are so many things I feel like I should be doing and I feel like a failure for not doing them yet.

Should I focus each day on writing something or focus each day on building something? Should I post on a schedule or post whenever I feel like it? Should I focus on craft shows, craft malls or online sales? Should I take more pictures or less? Should I spend more time on social media? Should I focus on brand awareness or actual products? Should I….

You are what you do not what you say you will do
You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.

There are a lot of should statements running through my mind. I cant help but recall my years working as a social worker in a mental health office as I read over that first paragraph. The most common “problem” my therapy clients encountered was the concept of “should”. “Should” statements are a form of cognitive distortion.

According to Wikipedia, Cognitive distortions are exaggerated or irrational thought patterns that are believed to perpetuate the effects of psychopathological states, especially depression and anxiety.

One of those cognitive distortions is the use of “should” statements. “Should” statements put unnecessary pressure on a person. Let’s look at some examples.
“I should call my mom daily.”

My identity rests solely and firmly....png
My identity rests solely and firmly on this: I am my mother’s daughter.

There is nothing inherently negative or positive about that statement. However, by stating that you should call your mom you are putting an expectation on yourself. If you call your mom you are doing what you should do – but on the other hand, if you don’t call your mom you are doing something you shouldn’t do. Good people feel bad when they do things they shouldn’t do. So, in this example – not calling your mom makes you feel bad – you should have called mom, but you didn’t so now you have failed.

A better thought pattern could be, “Calling my mom would make her happy.” This statement puts no expectation on you. It still encourages you to call your mom but does not set you up to feel like a failure if you don’t follow through. Instead, the act of calling mom is seen as a positive while not calling mom is now neutral.
“My kids should call me every day.”

and she loved a little girl.jpg
and she loved a little girl very, very much – even more than she loved herself.

Again, there is nothing inherently negative about that statement – but if that should statement is not fulfilled you will feel negatively about yourself or your child. If you tell yourself that your child should call you daily and they don’t – you feel distressed. You may doubt your worthiness of a phone call or doubt the affection of your child. When the child does call they are simply doing what they should do but not calling is something they shouldn’t do.

A different way of thinking could be, “I would really like it if my kids called me everyday.” If the child calls than you are happy, but if the child does not call you are simply neutral.

Winning the lottery is a great example. Few people believe they should win the lottery but everyone that plays would really like to win the lottery. When most people don’t have a winning ticket they may be disappointed but do not take it personally. They don’t believe they should win so they have no expectation of winning. Most people view a losing lottery ticket as a neutral experience. If you had the expectation that you should win the lottery though, that losing ticket would signify a personal failure for you.

Getting back to my own cognitive distortions – what are better ways of thinking for me? Instead of asking should I do this or should I do that I will view it another way.

Your future begins with your next thought
Your future begins with your next thought.

“It would be helpful for me to identify my priorities”. That statement perfectly sums up my dilemma today and does not put any undue expectations on me. When I ultimately assess my priorities I will have done something helpful for myself and my business. Until that time though, I am not failing at identifying my priorities. If I figure it out – Great! If I don’t figure it out – whatever, I’m in the same place I am now. By removing the expectation I remove the guilt of not accomplishing it.

It is unreasonable to expect that anyone knows everything at any given time. Stating that I should know my priorities implies that I am wrong for not knowing them at this exact moment. Any moment I spend not being fully aware of my priorities is an example of me doing something I shouldn’t be doing.

How is anyone supposed to get anything done when they view themselves as a failure right up until the moment of completion of that task? That is an unpleasant way to live.
Think about the times you felt anxious or depressed – was there a should statement involved?

Lesson of the Day: Drop the word should from your vocabulary. There is no upside to using it and dropping it completely will have profound impacts on your mental health.

Take a Break or the Load You Carry Will Crush You – A Functional Rustic Approach

Originally Published March 12, 2018. Updated August 28, 2018.

Taking time to do nothing often brings

As helpful as it is to reflect on situations that cause us distress – it is equally important to pay attention to experiences that bring us peace.

I’m feeling at peace today and it is directly related to taking a break this weekend. Functional Rustic is my business and I do it from home. Because my office is my living room it is difficult at times for me to stop working. I may not be writing a blog or building something – but even on the weekends I find myself doing work.

I enjoy the ‘work’ so it does not feel stressful to do it. However, even if I am completing fun tasks – I’m still thinking about work. I never actually take a break. It’s exhausting.
So, this past weekend I actually didn’t work. I didn’t update the website. I didn’t pin anything. I didn’t take any photos or videos. I didn’t build anything. I didn’t write anything. I didn’t even think about it. Instead, I played PC games (Civilization VI and Banished) for 12+ hours a day.

It. Was. Amazing.

The reason I work every day is I feel like if I don’t put the energy in the business will suffer. If I’m not there to supervise every moment than it will fall apart. However, this morning I am realizing that by taking a break this weekend I am better focused today. Because I am always thinking about Functional Rustic there are no “new ideas”. That is to say, I do not feel inspired. Ideas that come to mind when I’m thinking about the business are just tasks for work. When I am doing a non-work activity and have an idea for the business it feels like an inspiration. Feeling inspired is critical for me as an artist and business owner.

Today my ideas feel fresh. I’m not feeling the level of anxiety I normally do. I still have fears and worries and doubts but, they’re not consuming today. My thoughts are a heavy load to carry – both positive and negative. As with carrying any heavy load – taking a break is necessary or I risk being crushed.

In graduate school I had a professor that shared some advice. She asked the class, “When you have 5 hours of work and only 3 hours to do it – What should you do first?” The class offered responses such as write down what tasks you have, determine the priorities of the tasks, do the hardest ones first etc. The professor smiles and responds, “Those are very predictable responses – that is what you have been taught. But the most effective first step when you have 3 hours to complete 5 hours of work is to take a break.”

She went on to explain how by taking a break you are able to better focus and concentrate. If you’re freaked out about not having enough time – you will rush and you will make mistakes. You feel stressed out the entire time. By taking a 5 minute break at the start, you can approach the situation with fresh eyes and a clear mind.

You already know this concept. When you come home from work you want to sit down and take a breather before cooking or cleaning or completing whatever household tasks require your attention. Utilize that same strategy in other aspects of your life.

Lesson of the Day: Take breaks. The load you are carrying is heavy and if you do not take time to rest it will crush you.

UPDATE: In the months since I first wrote this I am learning that “not working” is not the same as “taking a break”. Specifically, if I am not engaging in enjoyable or relaxing activities outside of my work than I will not feel relaxed.

The summer months at Functional Rustic involve a great deal of tasks – tending to the lawn and gardens, making repairs and generally trying to keep all our ducks in a row. (Haha, that’s funny because it is both literally and figuratively true – we raise Muscovy Ducks and a Bronze Turkey!)

Because of all the tasks that need to be done it is very easy to use my free time doing chores. Though there is nothing wrong with tending house – chores are not enjoyable for me. So, if my time down time – away from work – is spent doing house work then I’m not actually relaxing, recharging or giving myself a break.

2nd Lesson of the Day: Make sure you are actually unburdening yourself of the load you are carrying and not just exchanging it for a different heavy load.

I live a charmed life. I am reminded of this fact every morning when I go outside. I’m surrounded by the tranquil sights and sounds of nature. After all, I basically live in the middle of the woods. Deer hang out in the yard, a Blue Heron is living in the pond and a family of Beavers call our wetlands home.

Life is a collection of moments.
Life is a collection of moments.

The cherry on top of the charmed sundae I call my life though, are my Muscovy Ducks and Bronze Turkey. Until a year ago I didn’t even know Muscovy Ducks or Bronze Turkeys existed, much less believed I would ever call them my friends. These quirky feather friends continue to take me on new adventures each and every day.

The birds teach great life lessons and are actually wonderful role models for me.

The ducks welcoming the turkey, Gladys, into their flock reminds me of the importance of welcoming others into my circle and accepting people as they are.

Seeing Amelia Air Duck build a nest in an empty box in the barn (instead of in the nesting box I built her) teaches me to think outside of the box. (Haha…a duck in a box inspires me to think outside of the box.)

And watching Gladys stay near the barn for over a month after she was attacked (neighbor dog ripped out all her feathers on her back and breast) instead of heading to the pond with her duck friends highlighted the importance of taking care of myself.

Me (the human) with Gladys (the Bronze Turkey of Functional Rustic). She finally got the courage to go to the pond so I did a photo shoot with her to celebrate.

The Muscovy Ducks and Bronze Turkey of Functional Rustic teach me a lot about ducks and turkeys too. For instance, Muscovy duck eggs are twice the size of extra large chicken eggs and a bronze turkey egg is twice the size of the Muscovy egg.

Today’s lesson from the Muscovy Ducks was also about eggs – making the eggs that is. That’s right folks, I’ve got duck porn for you!

The morning started out normal enough. I was filming the sunrise and decided to get some video of the birds. Usually these videos are of them wiggling their butts, eating or swimming – duck stuff. Today though, I happened upon Brutus, Goldie and Amelia Air Duck in a duck ménages à trois.

So here is how I think this all happened. Amelia Air Duck started to lay eggs in an empty box in the barn again. Yesterday I cleaned out her nest so I could eat them. Realizing that her nest is no longer safe (someone did steal all of her eggs after all!) she needed a new, safe place to lay her eggs.

Goldie, the other Muscovy Hen, is currently sitting on eggs. I theorize that Amelia Air Duck decided that laying her egg onto Goldie’s nest would keep her egg safe. The flaw in that plan though, is that Goldie is not just gonna get off her eggs because Amelia wants her to. So, again I am just theorizing, Amelia just climbs on top of Goldie and lays the egg on top of Goldie.

However, while Amelia Air Duck is trying to pop one out Brutus sees a great opportunity to pop one in – so to speak. When I walk on the scene all I see is Goldie on her eggs, Amelia Air Duck on top of Goldie and Brutus on top of Amelia – duck humping his little heart out.

I still can’t believe how fresh that egg was. It was hot, not warm, hot. And wet. So fresh it had duck juices on it. I didn’t even know that fluids were involved. Now that I think about it though, I’m quite happy to learn that my little ladies have some lubrication to get their eggs out.

To round out the morning it only seemed fitting to get at least one video that wasn’t pornographic. The video below is a typical morning in the Functional Rustic Barn – birds eating while I fill the pool and hose out the barn. Once the coffee is made I fill up my cup and head out the barn see what lessons are to be learned that day.

3 Crafts to Do This Weekend – Tutorials from Functional Rustic

Do you know how to create something? Are you willing to teach others? Functional Rustic wants to share what you know. Write a DIY tutorial and have it published on Functional Rustic. Email Sarah at contact@functionalrustic.com for details.

Looking for a fun and easy craft to do this weekend? Functional Rustic is here to help with 3 quick and easy crafts using items you probably already have at home!

Call me frugal, call me cheap – but when it comes to crafts and repurposing projects I don’t want to spend any money. One of the perks of DIY (Do It Yourself) projects is the cost savings associated with it. If you are anything like me than you will appreciate the 3 (practically FREE) craft tutorials Functional Rustic is presenting this week.

Repurposed Gift Card

The repurposed Amazon gift card is a personal favorite for me. It is simple to create but when shared it can have profound impacts. I repurpose my gift cards into thank you cards for strangers that do kind deeds. It is perfect because I can keep the “Thank You” card in my pocket and when someone is kind (holds a door open, compliments my dog etc.) I can immediately express my gratitude with an actual gift.

Imagine if you held the door open for someone and they said thank you and gave you a handmade Thank You gift. It might make you smile. Perhaps you would be inspired to hold the door open more often now that you know people actually appreciate it. And maybe, just maybe, you will be inclined to keep an eye out for kind people you meet just so you can give the Thank You Card to another kind soul.

T-Shirt Rope Toy

Our Furbabies deserve handmade gifts too! Valencia Merble the dog, our rescue dog, is what one might call a “power chewer”. That means that Val can completely destroy most dog toys in a matter of minutes. Wanting to spoil my dog but not wanting to break the bank doing so – I made my own toys for her.

This craft is fun because people of all ages can participate. As long as you can tie a knot and make a braid, you can make this toy. If you do not know how to tie a knot or braid – no problem! – the video tutorial explains it all.

Fun side note – the first time I published this tutorial I did not have a video – I simply advised the reader to braid the fabric. Well, in preparation for a craft show my mom came over to help me create some rope toys. I told her how to make it and she informed me that she did not know how to braid. This information blew my mind. How did I learn to braid if my mom didn’t know? I just assumed I learned it from her. Learning from my new found knowledge, I’ve added a video to further explain the process.

Sensory Bottle

Oil and water don’t mix but add some food coloring and a little glitter and you’ve got your very own sensory bottle. Quick, easy and oh so satisfying are the descriptors for this jewel. The best part of this project is the possibilities are endless for to make them unique to you.

Not only is the sensory bottle fun to interact with, creating it can be an educational activity too. It is the perfect craft to demonstrate how liquids have different densities, how color disperses in liquid and how glitter falls at different rates depending on the viscosity of the liquids.
